Laser Tag – Where it All Started

Some Quick Facts About Laser Tag (Wow Your Friends Next Time You Play!)

No matter if you’re a laser tag junkie or just want to learn about laser tag, we have some interesting facts for you. These are must-know facts before you play it for the first time. Some of which you might not have known before.

Unfortunately, these facts may not help you to become a better player, but you might win the best know-it-all amongst your friends or enemies in this case. After you’re done reading this, you are ready to suit up and play some real laser tag!

The game of laser tag was first introduced in 1979 and was called Star Trek Phaser. It got its inspiration from the laser guns and photon blasters in the popular series. It quickly gained popularity amongst Star Trek fans, but it didn’t take very long before people began to transform the game and focus it around new concepts that weren’t related to Star Trek. This broadened both its appeal and audience, and suddenly almost everyone was playing it.

Laser tag continued to grow in popularity all through the 80s. It had a massive explosion of fans in the 90s when arcades and carnivals were at their peak amongst teens. During the 90s, laser tag became more futuristic in its concepts, feeding movies like the Matrix and post-apocalyptic imaginings linked to the impending Y2K.

It’s Even Been Used by the Military

You don’t have to use all your brain cells to see how a laser tag could be a valuable training tool for the military. And laser tag is widely known to be used as a tactical training method for soldiers. It not only helped them practice their aim and fire upon an opponent, but it also taught them how to shield and protect their bodies during a firefight.

Unfortunately, it’s not a very common training method anymore. Most military groups have moved on and use laser tag’s cousin, paintball when looking for a safe way to simulate battles, even though laser tag is more accurate.

It Gets Competitive

If you think laser tag is a child’s game, you better think again. Many people take laser tag very seriously, maybe too seriously, and it gets just as competitive as any other sport. Zone World’s Laser Tag Championships began in 2003 and has since then been the main premier laser tag competition globally.

But it’s far from the only one, tournaments are held worldwide, so if you want to excel your game to the next level, the competition is out there.

There Actually Are No Lasers

What??? This may come as a surprise, but the red beams that come out from the front of your gun aren’t lasers. Lasers can be dangerous, damaging the eyes, and can even burn skin.

So, instead, laser tag uses infrared beams with sensors to play the game. The name laser tag was kept as an homage to the laser stun guns from Star Trek. Besides, the infrared tag doesn’t have the same cool ring to it.

Play Laser Tag

At Ghostly Games, we offer indoor and outdoor laser tag. We take care of all the setup and organisation so that you and/or your children can get straight to the fun!

There is something undeniably thrilling to looking through a scope on your laser tagger, pressing the trigger down “shooting” your target with infer red beams “lasers” and your tagger shouts “target down!” As you rush forward to your next bunker approaching your next target. All the while working amongst your team to defeat the opposition to win the final victory!

Or mind you, you could mindlessly run around, shooting the air blind, hoping you will finally hit something. Your tagger will eventually flash and declare you have no life left. You then simply run back to your respawn box that we provide you. This will instantly gain full health and get you back into the game.

One of our favourite features we have found with our cutting edge Razorback Pro Riffle Taggers is the ability for each player to check their independent screens on their taggers to see their teams score, their health and personal shoots in a row. The players have the ability to scroll through the HUD (heads up display) to review all the stats in the game. Via pressing the black button on the taggers. Or if you run out of “bullets” you simply press the red button to reload. And of course everything has its own sound effects.

Can you imagine opening your eyes to another reality, just by slipping on a PlayStation VR headset. Where a whole new world can be visited from the very seat you’re in. Well let me tell you Virtual Reality will not let you down.

Do you remember watching The Hollywood film The matrix wishing you could step into a world like that one? The first time I put on a VR head set I had no idea what I was in for. But wow! I never expected to feel like my own reality was gone and to be thrust into a totally different world, where anything suddenly felt possible… My immediate reaction. “I felt like I’ve stepped into the matrix!” Whatever way I looked, the VR headset delighted my senses, challenging my reality with a world of gaming that felt so real I felt like I could reach out and touch it. Now I don’t know about you but to me, this blew me away. Not only that, when you tilt, nod, shake or move your head while connected to your chosen VR game, you are not only a part of that reality but you become a part of the game. What’s better still when you add headphones it really does make the experience that much better.

I couldn’t wait to get my friends over to try it out too, so they could experience the rush of VR as well. This is definitely taking gaming as we know it to a whole other level of interaction. But I have to admit you can feel a little nauseated in the games that move around a lot. But you can swap with another person or change the game you’re in to change it up a bit, and let your head get back to reality so to speak.

The other side of it that I wasn’t expecting is how you can pick certain games to include the people around you. We often have fun playing with friends with one person in the VR world while the rest of us help point out clues on the tv screen  to stop a bomb in the VR world or in another game we use our controllers so we don’t get eaten by a cat, which the person wearing the VR headset controls. The list goes on and so does the fun 😉

The most exciting part of all is having the opportunity to bring all of this to our Video game truck where so many other people can choose to experience this if they wish. And I can tell you now VR is definitely something you want to experience at least once. What better way to gain team building skills and communication skills then navigating through a Virtual World of endless possibilities.

Another part of being able to add VR to Ghostly Games is giving people the choice to boost their Video Game Party to the next level with the opportunity to WOW their guests with perhaps something they haven’t been able to experience yet. What better way to have a lasting effect after the party has sadly ended, then their first time on VR with everyone being included as part of the journey into the beautiful world created by the new aged developer.

If your considering booking a party with us, please check out our VR game range to see what other exciting VR experiences await your next party.
